Public health systems in Europe play a huge role in securing the welfare of many nations and make major contributions in terms of providing peace of mind and improving the health of all citizens. To this end, the public health system always interacts with the economic and structural policy of a country and the degree to which it caters to the community's needs.
As far as the health reforms in Germany are concerned, transparency with regard to the services provided by the health service has become a central part of the debate that is raging in this area. Calling into question the economic efficiency of the system inevitably leads to a debate on value. Issues concerning quality management and quality assurance have been at the head of the debate, especially among GPs and in hospitals.
Given that both of these areas continue to be the focus of the health reform debate in Germany, they are subject to constant changes - the changing needs of patients, the changing legislative framework and changing budgets. What services can a hospital offer until 2010 and still break even? Where should a hospital focus its services, in which areas of treatment should it specialize and how might it guarantee its patients comprehensive care provision (in-patient and out-patient)? Finding answers to these questions is essential for the financial survival of hospitals. While wanting to provide medical excellence, economic realities must be taken into account.
With its MIKsolution+ and MIK-BIS, MIK has developed a set of tools specially designed to provide answers to these questions, to act and react flexibly to changing conditions and to develop forward-looking strategies.
